This 69,000-square-foot, secure, Primary Care Clinic that consists of pharmacy, radiology, pathology, lab medicine, ambulatory care, rehabilitation, and prosthetics departments, as well as women’s and C&P clinics. A 2,300-space, eight-level parking deck was also constructed adjacent to the Clinic.
Located in the Medical District of Birmingham, the three-level, 68,688-square-foot VA Primary Care Annex houses radiology, pharmacy, audiology, physical therapy, women’s services and general ambulatory care. These services were re-located from the existing medical center a few blocks away. The relocation allows the existing center to expand the emergency room, add a new dialysis center and make other necessary improvements in the hospital. Special security measures are included on this project including blast-force protection walls, ballistic-proof walls for the pharmacy and 150 security cameras in place between the garage and the annex.
This project also consists of a 752,644-square-foot parking garage with 2,335 spaces. The project, altogether, takes up an entire city block which posed a number of challenges for our project team. This is the second largest parking garage in Alabama.
A Special Place for our Veterans
The VA Primary Care Annex & Parking Deck project is special to BL Harbert because of its end-user, our Veterans. Building a facility that provides healthcare services to the ones who protect our country made this project especially important not only our project team, but also to our company. BL Harbert’s founder, the late Mr. Bill Harbert, Sr., was a veteran of World War II. He would have been extremely proud of the company’s involvement in this project.
Impact on Downtown
In addition to what this facility provides for our Veterans, this project also plays a role in the revitalization of downtown Birmingham. We are honored to be a part of restoring our city!
All About the Garage
The impact of the garage layout posed quite the challenge for the project team. There were 60,000 cubic yards of dirt excavated for the garage alone. The project team oversaw a 76-day erection schedule with 1,260 precast trucks. There were two cranes, lifting 50-60 pieces of precast daily. Naturally, with two cranes lifting that amount of weight, staying safe was a critical concern of every team member.
This is the 2nd largest parking garage in Alabama.
Community Service
Aligning with BL Harbert’s Guiding Principles, each project team has a goal to give back to the community in which they are working. Our project team for the VA Primary Care Annex took time out of their busy schedule to partner with the Christian Service Mission and help reconstruct a local Birmingham home that had been destroyed by a tornado. Residents Kendall, Tam, Kentorri and Kaidynce Beasley were so thankful for their new home and grateful for our project team’s efforts.
