BL Harbert International was the successful bidder for the University of South Alabama’s (USA) latest project, the Whiddon College of Medicine in Mobile.
This long-anticipated facility is set to enable USA to expand its medical school graduation classes from 80 to 100 students. The USA’s medical school is in the 85th percentile of medical schools whose doctors end up practicing in the same state they were educated in, a fact that garnered strong support for the project from Governor Ivey.
“As our site preparation phase wraps up, we are pleased to have awarded the contract to BL Harbert, and we are looking forward to partnering with them as a member of our team for the building construction as we take the next step in the delivery of this transformational project for our campus,” said Buck Kelley, USA’s chief facilities management officer.
The new five-story building will include a basement and penthouse and feature classrooms, laboratories, conference rooms, student lounges, and a storm shelter, covering an area of approximately 294,284 square feet. Strategically located near the Human Sciences Building and the College of Nursing, it will complete what will be known as the medical district within the campus.
“We’re honored to work with the University of South Alabama on a legacy project that will significantly benefit our organizations. Additionally, we are pleased to partner with esteemed design firms Eskew+Dumez+Ripple and Perkins + Will,” said Dan Price, Senior Vice President of BL Harbert International.
