New U.S. Embassy Windhoek, Namibia, Awarded Global Best Project by Engineering News-Record

Engineering News-Record (ENR), a leading construction industry news magazine, named the U.S. Embassy in Windhoek, Namibia, as a Global Best Project in the Government Building category.

BL Harbert International (BLHI) partnered with the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations to construct the new U.S. Embassy in Windhoek, Namibia. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill was the design architect, and BL Harbert International constructed the Embassy, with PAGE Architects serving as the architect of record. The new Embassy officially opened on December 7, 2023. The diplomatic facility symbolizes the strong relationship between the United States and Namibia and is a hub for cultural connections and diplomatic activities.

The 12.8-acre site is located in the Klein Windhoek neighborhood on Nelson Mandela Avenue. The Windhoek Embassy Project presents a sensitive integration with the site, taking advantage of both passive and active sustainable practices and local materials. The combination of these approaches and their expression results in a positive image of a U.S. Embassy, technologically innovative and progressive while being respectful and sensitive to the context.

This multi-building project supports the important U.S.–Namibian diplomatic and commercial relations and embodies the mission of Overseas Buildings Operations to provide safe, secure, functional, and resilient facilities that provide a robust platform for U.S. diplomacy abroad.

“On behalf of the entire BL Harbert Project Team we are honored to receive the ENR Global Best Project Award for the New U.S. Embassy in Windhoek, Namibia. We want to thank the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations Director Ambassador William Moser and his team for the opportunity to play a key role in bringing this important diplomatic project to life.

We are grateful to receive this award, however, none of it would be possible without the dedication and commitment of all of BL Harbert’s employees from around the world.” – Mike Veal, Executive Vice President, BL Harbert International
